John Moriarty, M.D., RPVI, is a specialist in vascular and interventional radiology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He is a member of both the departments of Radiology and of Medicine (cardiology) and is the Director of the IVC Filter Clinic, the UCLA PE Response Team (UPERT) and the program for Interventional Innovation and co-Director of Vascular Ultrasound Service.
His areas of clinical expertise and research interest focus on thoracic aortic disease, venous disease, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), IVC filters and arteriovenous venous malformations. His research interests are primarily clinical and he is the national principal investigator for the RAPID registry for treatment of clots and vegetations, an investigator on multiple trials for stents, IVC filters, treatment of acute and chronic DVTs and novel embolic materials. He has published numerous papers and book chapters and given many national and international invited lectures on these topics and is a reviewer for CHEST Journal, Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology (CVIR), Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (JVIR) and American Journal of Roentgenology (AJR).
Dr. Moriarty obtained his medical degree from University College Dublin in Dublin, Ireland, where he graduated with First Class Honours (Summa Cum Laude) in both Medicine and Surgery and received the Misericordiae Gold Medal for placing first in his graduating class. After completing his internship in both medicine and surgery, he began his internal medicine residency in the Mater University Hospital, Dublin, then completed his board certification in Internal Medicine (MRCPI) in 2005 and commenced his radiology residency the same year. He served as Chief Resident and also received the Radiologic Society of Ireland Gold Medal in 2007, prior to becoming a fellow of the Faculty of Radiologists in 2008. Dr. Moriarty moved to UCLA in 2009, where he finished fellowships in Interventional Radiology and Cardiovascular Imaging. Upon completion of his fellowship, Dr. Moriarty accepted a faculty position at UCLA where he is now an Associate Professor of Radiology and also of Medicine (Cardiology).
He is married to the real boss, Molly, and has a rapidly growing family.
